SOUTHEND United’s under 21 team start their pre-season campaign at Chelmsford City tonight.

The game will see coach Kevin Maher heading back to Melbourne Park where he managed the Clarets at the end of last season.

And the former Shrimpers midfielder is looking forward to seeing his new look side in action.

“Training has been going well and the fitness levels are good but the lads are eager to start playing so it will be good to get out there tonight,” said Maher.

“A lot of them are going to be playing the full 90 minutes which is good because we need them to be getting that match sharpness now.”

Midfielders Renei Batlokwa and Joe Bedford – who came on for Blues at Newcastle United on Tuesday night – will both be in action against Chelmsford.

However, defender Sonny Coutts (knee) and striker Dan Walker (groin) both miss out.

Midfielder Tom Rosenthal – who been on trial with Blues – will also not feature after being told he will not be offered a contract at the club.

Tonight’s game at Melbourne Park kicks off at 7.45pm.
