SOUTHEND United’s under 21s started their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Chelmsford City tonight.
Harry Phillips fired the Shrimpers in front midway through the second half before the Clarets hit back to triumph.
But Blues’ coach Kevin Maher was keen to look at the positives of the performance.
“I was really pleased with how the boys stood up to the challenge against a big, physical team who played very direct football,” said Maher.
“I thought we were very unlucky to lose the game and a terrible refereeing decision for their first goal proved to be important.”
