CONCORD Rangers can claim the Island bragging rights after they beat Canvey 2-0 in their final pre-season friendly.

Steve Cawley and Dean Mason got the goals in either half, although the Gulls put in a good account of themselves.

Indeed, they had the ball in the net after just four minutes, with Lee O’Leary heading home impressively only for the goal to be chalked off.

But Concord struck first, when Joao Carlos was tripped in the penalty area by Jake Pitty. Cawley made no mistake from 12 yards.

But Canvey came close on a number of occasions, with Joey May’s delivery from set-pieces causing havoc in the away penalty area more than once.

Concord started the second-half strongly, with new signing Harry Hodd coming within inches of getting the finishing touch to a Jay Dowie cross.

Hodd was again denied after a weak back pass by former Beach Boys defender Luis Morrison, with Conor Gough keeping his effort out, while Harrison Chatting was denied by Concord stopper Ben McNamara up the other end.

Gough’s acrobatics were keeping Canvey in the game, as he kept out Cawley and Hodd although the second goal wasn’t long in coming.

A cross from Carlos was hooked off the line by Ashley Dumas although the loose ball hit Mason and found the net, with the referee ignoring calls the ball had hit an arm.

Canvey’s Martin Tuohy had a late chance to reduce arrears but the game finished 2-0.

East Thurrock United won their penultimate game of pre-season 3-2 against Harlow Town.

The Rocks had to come from losing positions twice to get the win, after Kieran Bishop and Mario Noto had put the Hawks in front at half-time.

Harry Honesty had pulled Rocks level on two occasions but it was new signing Joe Gardner that scored the winner for John Coventry’s men.

Billericay Town won 2-1 at Thurrock, with substitute Tyler Brampton scoring a brace to hand Craig Edwards’ side the win.

Fleet had led at the interval, following Danny Francis’ strike. But Edwards made three chances after half-time and it was Brampton that made the telling introduction.

It was disappointment for Great Wakering Rovers as they went down 2-0 to Erith & Belvedere, of the Southern Counties East Football League.

Two goals in the final 20 minutes of the match ensured the result.

Bowers & Pitsea drew 2-2 with Felixstowe & Walton, and the game burst into life in a 15 minute spell.

Bowers fell behind but Brad Warner equalised from the penalty spot after a foul on Lewis Manor.

Minutes later it was 2-1 to Felixstowe before Warner got the second leveller of the afternoon.

Southend Manor finished their pre-season with a 9-1 thrashing of Southern Combination Football Premier Division.
