MARK Oxley wants Southend United’s win against Oxford to be a catalyst in the Shrimpers’ season – both for him and the rest of the team.

The Blues shot-stopper made two fine late saves to help Phil Brown’s side beat the O’s 2-1 at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.

And the 26-year-old is now looking to build on the improved performance.

“I want Tuesday night to be a catalyst for me and the team,” said Oxley.

“It was a good win against Oxford but we all need to pull together collectively and perform consistently from now on.

“But talk is cheap really and we need to get out there again on Saturday and get another win by producing a good performance against a good team.”

Oxley did well to deny both Chris Maguire and Wes Thomas in the second half against Oxford and his performance was described as outstanding by Blues boss Brown.

However, Oxley’s display came just three days after an error of his handed Northampton Town the lead.

And Oxley was delighted to be able to bounce back from his mistake.

“It’s a horrible, horrible feeling when you make a mistake like that but you have to find a way to take it on the chin,” said the keeper.

“It’s hard to take but I’ve been lucky enough to have played quite a few games over the years and you learn to draw on that experience.

“When you make a mistake as a goalkeeper nine times out of 10 it results in a goal.

“But you have to learn to come back from it and I would like to think I did that against Oxford.

“It was a good collective performance and as a team we were all on the same page again.”

The victory – which was the Shrimpers’ third in League One this season – moved them up to 19th in the standings.

But Oxley is keen for that to improve and has now firmly settled in to his new surroundings.

“It was a big transition coming down to Southend but I’m certainly not going to use that as an excuse because I’m not that kind of person,” said Oxley, who lined up for Hibernian in Scotland last season.

“I’ve settled in now though and the lads we have here are top drawer so it’s been easy to come into the group.

“I knew one or two of them already but I’m loving it here and hopefully we can get on a good run of results now.

“We had been hoping to do it after the Millwall game but we went back to being our old selves again at Northampton which was disappointing.

“But we reacted well against Oxford and now we need to go and get a result against Peterborough as well.”

Oxley’s display against Oxford also saw him voted man of the match in an online Echosport poll.

Oxley received 43 per cent of the votes, with the fit-again Anthony Wordsworth finishing second and Ryan Leonard coming third.
