SIMON Cox is hoping the break in Southend United’s season can help reignite his strike partnership with Nile Ranger.

The Shrimpers duo had bagged four goals between them in their first four games alongside each other in attack.

But neither forward has netted in their last three outings and Cox hopes renewed energy levels can stop that run continuing.

“The partnership with Nile and myself started off really well but I’m unhappy with the last couple of games,” said Cox.

“I don’t think we’ve really been able to get going and we haven’t been able to build on the good start we had which has been disappointing.

“But we’ve had this little break now and I think it will have done us good.

“Of course getting knocked out of the FA Cup and losing to Millwall was disappointing and we would much rather have been playing in the second round.

“However, we’ve been able to have a bit of a rest and hopefully Nile and I can get back on it again.”

The duo could start alongside each other in tomorrow night’s Checkatrade Trophy clash against Oxford United.

And Cox is keen to secure a good run in the competition, despite a large number of fans being angered by the new format which has seen under 23 teams from category one clubs being allowed to take part.

“The fans will always do what they think is right but as players we have to focus on winning every game we play,” said Cox.

“If we have a good run we can get to Wembley and that would be fantastic.”

However, picking up more points in the league remains Blues’ main priority and Cox’s ability on the ball has helped make that happen in recent weeks.

Cox leads the Shrimpers’ assists charts having made eight goals so far this season and he is pleased to be teeing up his team-mates.

“I was brought in to help the side anyway I could and I’m pleased to be making goals for others,” said Cox.

“Hopefully that can continue and we can keep on picking up good results.”
