SOUTHEND United have been unable to complete a deal for winger Zavon Hines in time for him to feature against Oxford United tonight.

Hines, who has been on trial with the Shrimpers, remains in talks about a permanent switch to Roots Hall.

But Blues boss Phil Brown confirmed the transfer had not been sorted in time for Hines to take on the U’s in this evening’s Checkatrade Trophy clash.

“The deadline has passed for tonight’s game but we remain in talks with Zavon and hopefully we can have some good news before the match gets underway tonight,” said Brown.

“It would certainly give us a boost to get the deal done ahead of our game with Coventry City this weekend and that’s what we will be working towards.”

Hines began his career with West Ham United where had made 31 appearances for the first team and scored three goals.

The winger also represented England at under 21 and spent time on loan with both Coventry - who Blues host this weekend - and Bournemouth.

Hines has also lined up for Bradford City and Dagenham & Redbridge but has not made a first team appearance since lining up for the Daggers against Notts County in September 2015.

Since then, Hines has undergone two operations on the same knee but is now back to full fitness and keen to kick start his career.
