SIMON Cox bagged the 100th goal of his career to fire Southend United to a dramatic 2-1 win against Rochdale at Roots Hall on Saturday.

The Shrimpers striker netted three minutes into stoppage time to secure Phil Brown’s side all three points in an entertaining encounter which saw both teams shown red cards in the first half.

And Cox’s memorable landmark strike continued to give him goosebumps long after the final whistle.

“I didn’t think a winning goal was going to come, but I’m really pleased to have got it and it’s giving me goosebumps even now,” said Cox.

“It means a lot to me to have won the game and to also get my 100th goal.

“I’m in a club not many people get to and I’m happy to have reached the landmark alongside this group of players because they’re a great bunch with real character and togetherness”

Cox celebrated his late strike by unveiling a specially printed T-shirt worn under his match shirt.

But it did not go to plan as the first two numbers wore off during the game!

“The kitman has done me,” laughed Cox.

“I asked him to print a 100 goal T-shirt before the game and thought it would be a good way to celebrate if it happened.

“Unfortunately the one and the zero came off during the game because of sweat I guess, so it actually looked like I was celebrating no goals.

“I think I’m definitely going to have to photoshop the picture now!”

Cox’s late strike came after Rochdale forward Calvin Andrew had earlier cancelled out Marc-Antoine Fortune’s opening goal for the Shrimpers.

Blues also had Jermaine McGlashan sent off in the first half after visiting centre-back Keith Keane had already been dismissed.

And Cox was full of praise for the character seventh placed Southend showed to come out on top.

“It was a game that really did have a bit of everything but our character won it in the end because we kept on going,” said the 29-year-old.

“Our work-rate was also excellent and it was a great way to bounce back from the disappointing defeat to Sheffield United.

“It’s a nice feeling and we’ll enjoy it.

“But now it’s all about being focused and making sure we’re ready for what is another big game with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.”
