GREAT Wakering Rovers boss Keith Wilson was pleased to see his side ‘show passion’ despite losing 2-0 at Maldon & Tiptree.

First half goals from Liam Nash and Eoin McKeown wrapped up all three points for the hosts, and it secured the table toppers’ 16th consecutive home win.

Jamie Guy could have got Wakering back into the game, but he failed to score from the penalty spot, while Scott Pethers also hit the post late on for the visitors.

Wilson said: “It was a better performance from us but their first goal came from our mistake, which has been the story of our season. On a normal pitch, our goalkeeper saves it.

“But we got back in the game and then they score their second on the counter attack and you start to think it’s going to be the same as the previous weeks and we’re going to get a hiding.

“But we showed a bit of pride and passion and got a penalty in the first minute of the second half. If that goes in, it’s a different game.

“We hit the post late on as well so it was a better performance.”

Nash gave the hosts a 15th minute lead after a mistake from goalkeeper Dylan Skinner and McKeown soon added the second.

Wakering were awarded a penalty early in the second half, but striker Guy sent his spot kick wide of the target.

Wilson’s side pushed for a goal to get back into the game but were unable to find a way past Maldon goalkeeper Daniel Wilks.

Pethers came closest when his late strike hit the post, but with results elsewhere going against the visitors, Wakering have dropped to the foot of the Ryman North.
