BILLERICAY Town manager Craig Edwards said he was pleased to repay the supporters’ faith with a thumping 7-0 Ryman League Cup win at Worthing to book their place in the semi-final.

Town were unstoppable on the south coast, with a Chris Assombalonga brace, plus efforts from Rob Swaine, Billy Bricknell, Isaac Layne, Lewis Taaffe and Bradley Confrey ensuring comfortable progress in the end.

Billericay will host Ryman South side South Park in the semi-final and will be strong favourites to reach the final, and Edwards was pleased to watch his men finally put a side to the sword.

“I am pleased for the fans as they have made fruitless journeys recently and to put on a show was good,” he said.

“It should have been more. I challenged them to be ruthless and hammer it home as we need to get this into our game. I also wanted another clean sheet as I can’t emphasise the importance of that enough.

“Worthing rested players and that baffled me. I think if you are at home in the cup quarter-final you should go for it I believe.

“I would have expected to play Merstham but South Park beat them on penalties so they are obviously a decent side.

“But it was an all-round good performance. The young lads did well and all-in-all it was a terrific night.

“Brad (Confrey) and Will (Putt) certainly have a bright future. I take great pride in managing the under-21s and, although we have some big name players, nothing warms the cockles of the supporters more than when you bring a young man through and I am no different.”

Edwards also confirmed the signing of striker Adam Cunnington from Bromley yesterday.

The 29-year-old joins Billericay’s wealth of attacking options, with the 6ft 3in striker having previously turned out for sides including Dagenham & Redbridge, Tamworth and Cambridge United.

And Edwards said it was excellent business for Billericay.

“I have always had a big target man in my teams and I now have a quartet of quality strikers who all offer something different.

“I don’t see it as a case of me having to keep them happy but it is they who have to keep me happy.

“Adam is a top lad and a welcome addition to the squad ahead of Saturday.”
