GEORGE Griffiths scored two more tries for Southend Saxons but was unable to stop them suffering a 60-14 defeat in Guernsey.

The 17-year-old touched down twice in the first half to take his tally to four tries in his last six games.

But, despite his own efforts, Griffiths was left feeling disappointed at the final whistle as Southend suffered a convincing setback.

“I think Saturday’s game could have gone a lot better than it did,” said Griffiths.

“We were playing well up until half-time and were still in it about 10 minutes after half-time as well.

“Unfortunately after that we made some errors and they kept the score-board rolling with points after that.

“In the end the final scoreline was very frustrating for us because I know how well the team can play and the potential we have as well.

“On the day and the way the game went as well I felt the other team weren’t a team good enough to put that many points on us so it was disappointing to take.

“But we have to be able to react in the right way now.”

Guernsey led 22-14 at half-time with Griffiths’ tries both being converted by Brad Burr.

And Griffiths - who attends Seevic College - was happy to be able to continue his good form.

“My tries were very pleasing,” said the youngster.

“I had to work hard for them and they were at the end of some good phases and plays from the team so it was good and I’m really enjoying playing in the first team.

“Hopefully I can keep scoring tries but the most important thing is to pick up the victories, especially with the position we find ourselves in at the moment.”

After Saturday’s defeat, Southend remain in the National Three London & SE relegation zone, seven points away from catching Chichester who sit just above the drop zone.

The 12th placed Saxons host Shelford - who are sixth - a week on Saturday in their next encounter.

And Griffiths is keen for Southend, who suffered a ten point deduction, to get back to winning ways as they continue their bid to avoid a second successive relegation.

“It’s very important to bounce back now,” said the teenager.

“We need to get some points and try to climb up the table so it’s going to be another big game at home against Shelford.

“But we don’t want to dwell on what happened against Guernsey too much.

“We just want to look at how best we can improve, stay strong and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again because we have some big games coming up which we need to win.”
