WESTCLIFF surged to a third victory in succession, beating Amersham & Chiltern 59-5.

The win moved Westcliff up to seventh in the National Three London & SE standings and delighted their director of rugby Rick Compton.

“The team are in a rich vein of form at the moment and enjoying their rugby which is no more than they deserve,” said Compton.

“We are very close to achieving our goals and we are getting there with a smile on our face.

“The lads and the coaching team deserve a great deal of credit, we have won with a bonus point for three consecutive weeks, scoring 20 tries in the process and Saturday was our sixth consecutive home victory.

“More than one pundit had us finishing bottom of the league after a difficult campaign last season but that now is not possible and we are aiming for much more.

“This week it’s another tough game against Chichester, who have strung together some good victories in recent weeks.

“We picked up some lumps and bumps so some midweek medical assessments will be required but the team we put out will be confident, capable and determined.”

Westcliff were quickly into their stride at the weekend and opened the scoring with a try from Charlie Jobling inside the first five minutes of the match.

Sensing blood, Westcliff returned to the Amersham 22 and ran through a series of controlled phases from left to right and back again.

Playing advantage, Reece Whiting slipped a grubber kick behind the defensive line and Jobling was on hand again to get the final touch.

Chris Dudman added the conversion before Westcliff went further ahead when Andrew Roskams was fed the ball on the right touchline and skipped past his opposite number to feed supporting fellow wing Ross Merrick, who crossed and ran in under the posts.

The hosts now held a 19-0 lead but the visitors, to their credit, shook off what was clearly a difficult start and produced their best rugby of the day for the next 20 minutes.

Westcliff, for whatever reason, were not as commanding as they had previously been and Amersham built up a head of steam.

But, despite pressurising and stretching the home defence, they failed to breach it while Westcliff had no such difficulties and soon bagged their fourth try of the afternoon as Rory Lane touched down to make it 26-0 at half-time.

After the break, Merrick scored his second try of the game before the winger turned provider after a searing line break saw him feed the ball inside to Uta Tupuola, who ran in from 40 metres by virtue of a couple of hand offs.

Dudman then added another try before rock-bottom Amersham got off the mark with an unconverted try.

However, Westcliff were soon back on top with Dudman and Tupuola both scoring late on.
