BILLERICAY Town owner Glenn Tamplin has signed a ‘recognised striker from a higher level’ as he finalises his squad ahead of the Ryman Premier League run-in.

Tamplin, who is also caretaker manager, confirmed an offer had been accepted for a striker who had scored more than 30 goals this season.

This follows reports Billericay had bid for 40-goal Leiston striker Matt Blake, a move the 28-year-old striker ‘turned down’.

Tamplin denied the rumour, but did say the striking department was an area he wanted to strengthen, despite the excellent form of Billy Bricknell and Adam Cunnington.

“I have agreed a deal with a striker,” said Tamplin. “He is a recognised centre forward who plays at a higher level.

“He wants to join the club and we equally want him here.

“He is not a Ryman Premier League striker. I have seen some stories online but why would I sign a striker from this division when I can get one with a better ratio from a higher division?”

Despite Tamplin's claims, Leiston hitman Blake told the Ipswich Star he had turned down a move to Billericay, despite describing them as ‘a massive club’.

He said: “Billericay are a massive club and, at the end of the day, they are probably going to be the biggest club in non-league football.”

“I can’t run the risk of signing something now when potentially something could happen over the summer.

“It is tough, it was a very hard decision for me and it could backfire.

“But for me it’s about my heart and desire to play higher.

“The money was on the table and it had to be looked at.

“I have gone with my heart over my pocket.”

Blake would have been the second signing from Leiston in a week, after midfielder Byron Lawrence joined.

Tamplin added the signing of the striker would be the final business this season, with another big name signing - who has played in the Premier League - also signed today.

“These deals will take us through to the summer,” confirmed Tamplin.
