SOUTHEND United’s top goalscorer Simon Cox has set his sights on AFC Wimbledon after confirming his return to full health with a dramatic winning goal against Walsall.

Cox missed the 2-0 win at Coventry City after suffering an illness and was selected among the substitutes on Saturday for the clash with the Saddlers.

But the 29-year-old came off the bench to bag Blues’ third goal in a 3-2 win and he is now seeking another three points in Saturday’s clash with the Dons.

“It was a massive win for us at the weekend,” said Cox, who has now bagged 12 goals so far this season.

“The boys all showed great spirit to come back and get the three points and I was really pleased to come on and play a part.

“It was a real rollercoaster of a game, being 2-0 down and then winning 3-2 but that’s the way it’s probably going to be between now and the end of the season.

“Getting the three points was a great feeling, especially the way it happened, but we need to go and get another win at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.”

Cox scored twice in the Shrimpers’ 3-0 win against the Dons at Roots Hall on Boxing Day.

But the striker is expecting a tricky rematch with Neal Ardley’s side who are currently 13th in the League One standings.

“I’m sure it will be another difficult game for us on Saturday,” said Cox.

“I’ve never played away at Wimbledon before but I’m expecting it to be a tight ground and they’re a good team so we’re in for a real test.

“However, we’ll certainly be going into the game in good shape after two wins in a row and it would be great if we could go and make it three.”

Victory at the weekend moved Blues up to sixth in the League One standings, prior to last night’s fixtures.

And Cox is now ready to play more of a part against the Dons after recovering from illness.

“It was really frustrating having to miss the Coventry game,” said the forward.

“It was a flu type cold I was struggling with and I just had no energy so it was the correct decision for me to miss the game, even though I wasn’t very happy about it.

“I didn’t even travel to the match because I didn’t want to pass on what I had to the rest of the lads.

“But I feel much better now and I’m looking forward to the game this weekend.”

Cox will also be keen to hit the back of the net after going nine away games without a goal.
