Great Wakering Rovers 1-4 Bury Town

Ryman North

GREAT Wakering Rovers failed to end their horrendous home record in the Ryman North as their final match of the season ended with another thumping.

Bury Town won 4-1 at Burroughs Park to ensure Wakering’s winless run of 21 matches will go into next season – a run that stretches back to December 2016.

And it was an 11 minute spell that did the damage – with all four Bury goals coming in that spell.

Wakering were already down but were looking to end the season on a more promising note against a Bury side who had little to play for in mid-table.

But, after a relatively even start, it was Bury that took the lead. Josh Mayhew got the goal that put Bury in charge.

And the same man doubled the visitors’ advantage five minutes later. Mayhew netted to put Wakering in real trouble seven minutes before half-time.

But it was to get much worse for the home faithful.

Luke Read scored twice in four minutes before the interval to end the contest.

After the break, Wakering battled on and pulled a goal back through Neil Richmond, the first since his return to the club.

But it wasn’t enough to run Bury close.
