MICHAEL Timlin has urged everyone connected with Southend United to remain as positive as possible in the Shrimpers’ ongoing push for the play-offs.

Phil Brown’s side remain seventh in the League One table, a point behind the top six, after suffering a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

But Timlin has called on everyone to remain united as Blues bid to work their back into the top six in the final game of the season.

“After the way last season ended and this one began, would we have all taken being in with a chance of making the play-offs on the final day of the season? Of course we would,” said Timlin.

“I know we haven’t had the best of spells and we should have already done enough to have the play-offs wrapped up by now.

“But everything plays a part and Millwall are showing how tough it is as well.

“We’re frustrated and the fans are within their rights to be as well but we’re still in with a chance and we all need to stay together.

“Moans and groans aren’t going to help anyone at this stage.

“I think we’ll be lucky to get in the play-offs because we still need Millwall to slip up.

“But the chance to get this club promoted to the Championship is massive so let’s have a right go at it.

“Our fans have been fantastic but we need them right behind us and cheering everything we do because we do still have the chance to do something special this season.”

Blues host 19th placed Bury in their final game of the season on Sunday and will go into the clash a point behind Millwall who travel to 10th placed Bristol Rovers at the weekend.

Rochdale, who are a point below Southend in eighth, can still also make the play-offs and host fifth placed Bradford City at the weekend.

But Timlin is only staying focused on the Shrimpers.

“All we can do is make sure we win our game against Bury,” said the 32-year-old.

“The last few weeks have been disappointing and so was Saturday.

“I made an error for their goal and I apologise for that.

“But we still have a chance and we have to do all we can to take it.”
