JASON Williams admits two former Concord Rangers players had a key role to play after he decided to join the Essex outfit.

The former Southend United striker raised some eyebrows after making the move to the Aspect Arena.

And the 21-year-old said Lyle Della-Verde and Jordan Chiedozie had nothing but positive things to say about the National League South side.

He added he had turned down trials from clubs higher up the non-league pyramid.

“I had announced on Twitter that I was leaving Southend and I had a few clubs get in touch asking if I wanted to trial with them,” he said.

“I was working hard to get as fit as possible and my agent text saying Concord Rangers were interested.

“Lyle is one of my closest friends and I have known him for many years,” he added.

“He spoke to me about the set-up there and about how he enjoyed it last year and he sold it to me more than most.

“I know Lyle’s games and I would love to play alongside him. Before I replied to the Concord Rangers manager I spoke to Lyle.

“I spoke to Jordan too as our paths crossed when I was at Southend a few years ago, so we have that rapport.

“Neither of them had a bad word to say.”

Williams’ career stalled in the last year.

He has been loaned out to Chelmsford City and Boreham Wood in the last two seasons before his release earlier in the summer.

And he is hoping an impressive showing at Concord will help him secure a move back into the Football League.

“Wherever I go I want to score goals,” he said.

“I want to hit double figures and that is always my aim.

“But I am confident and am determined to show my qualities.”
