SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was full of praise for his side's mentality after seeing them beat Bishop's Stortford 4-0 tonight.

Simon Cox bagged a brace for Blues while Michael Kightly and Nico Cotton were also on target.

But it was the Shrimpers' attitude which pleased Brown the most.

"I’m not bothered about the score, it’s about the attitude and the mentality and that was spot on from minute one," said Brown.

"Things are moving along nicely and we played some good football tonight.

"We created some good chances and put four of them away.

"It's great to see Coxy scoring and I have to say I thought the front two were very impressive.

"They pressed the living daylights out of the opposition."

Both of Cox's goals were made by winger Jermaine McGlashan who also played a part in the build up to Michael Kightly's strike.

And Brown believes the number of players pushing for a start will bring the best out of the winger.

"Jermaine has seen there will be competition for places out wide bt he did well," said Brown.

"He knows I like playing lopsided 4-4-2 but it’s up to him to force his way into the team and make me play with two wingers."

The Shrimpers will also be looking to remain solid at the other end of the pitch and Brown is pleased with how summer signing Michael Turner has settled into the back four.

"I know Michael’s strengths and he’s a colossus back there," said Brown.

"He gets in the way of attacks and breaks things up.

"He's a very good defender at this level."
