SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has vowed his side will never repeat the poor level of performance they produced at Rotherham United.

A sub-standard Shrimpers were thrashed 5-0 by the Millers at the New York Stadium on Saturday.

But Brown has promised Blues will never play that poorly again during the remainder of his spell in the Roots Hall hot-seat.

“I can state to the Southend United fans that they will never sample another day like that during my time as manager,” said Brown.

“We’ve spoken it through and we’ve gone down the road of video analysis again too, so I think we’ve got to the bottom of what went wrong, which is of course my job to do.

“What I think will stay behind closed doors and it’s a big game for us against Plymouth now.

“Talk is cheap so we have to go out there and show Rotherham was a one off.”

Plymouth - who were promoted from League Two last season - have also taken three points from their opening two fixtures and saw off Charlton Athletic 2-0 at the weekend.

The Pilgrims will now be looking to build on that victory at Roots Hall.

But Brown has already been buoyed by the reaction of his squad in training.

“Training has been nothing short of outstanding,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“However, we need to carry that on for the rest of the week now and also take it into Saturday but it’s going to be another tough game as Plymouth are a strong side.”

Blues started the League One season with an impressive 2-1 win against highly fancied Blackburn Rovers at Roots Hall and now have their sights set on securing more success at home.

And centre-back John White is also keen for the Shrimpers to bounce back.

“We have to put things right and we’re working extremely hard to do that,” said White.

“We need to show some pride and do the basics.

“We did the basics against Blackburn and it gave us the platform to go and win the game.

“But on Saturday, Rotherham did the basics and we didn’t.

“I think that goes a long way and we have to get that right on Saturday.”
