SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown insists his squad have been lifted by the return of Nile Ranger.

The controversial striker was released from prison 10 weeks into an eight month sentence after pleading guilty to online fraud.

And Brown said Blues’ players were pleased to see the 26-year-old back at Roots Hall for Saturday’s clash with Plymouth Argyle.

“Nile came to the ground after a training session on Saturday and you could see it lifted the changing room,” said Brown.

“He watched the game with Plymouth and is coming along nicely with the work he’s been doing.”

Ranger - who has not played since April - is being put through his paces by the club’s fitness staff.

But Brown has yet to decide when the striker will be back in action.

“He’s had a week of human movement rather than being caged up and he’s enjoying working hard,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“Next week I think we’ll look at introducing some work with the ball and then we’ll take things from there.

“I would imagine he will need a game in the under-23s or in a behind closed doors game if we have one but we’ll have to see how it goes.”

And Brown has also warned the striker to stay focused on football.

“I’ve told Nile to stay clear of anything detrimental to his career,” said Brown.

“I’ve got Nile’s backing with that and we also have the backing of his family.”
