SOUTHEND United midfielder Anthony Wordsworth raised a glass in celebration on Saturday - five months after being injured by one.

Wordsworth bagged Blues’ second goal in their 2-2 draw against Northampton Town at Roots Hall.

But the 28-year-old - who had been out injured since April - revealed he could have returned far sooner had it not been for a freak injury he suffered watching Arsenal triumph in the FA Cup final in May.

“I should have been back a couple of months ago but I trod on a wine glass and had to have an operation on my foot,” said Wordsworth.

“I jumped from the sofa when Arsenal scored in the FA Cup final and my foot went through the stem of a wine glass “I had a bit of a nightmare because it meant I couldn’t do the work I was supposed to be doing on my hamstring so it delayed my comeback.”

Wordsworth was therefore forced to miss the start of the season.

And he was shocked to start against the Cobblers.

“It was nice to start but it came as a bit of a surprise because I hadn’t really trained that much,” said Wordsworth.

“You could probably see that in the first half with how rusty I was.

“I cramped up in the first half too but it was great to be out there again.

“The manager showed good faith in me and I wanted to repay him.”

Wordsworth did that by securing a point for the Shrimpers with a well-taken goal.

And the midfielder was delighted to see the ball hit the back of the net.

“I got quite emotional after the goal,” said Wordsworth.

“I’ve had three operations in less than a year so it’s been tough to take.

“But as soon as I knew I was playing I visualised scoring so I’ll put it down to the power of positive thinking.

“However, I need to build on this now and as a team hopefully things will start to go for us.”
