GEORGIE Smith will be looking to pack a punch on his return to the boxing ring this weekend.

Southend Rugby Club will be hosting the one-off Mayhem in the Marquee event on Saturday.

And Smith is just one of a host of local boxers who will be making an appearance.

Giles Carter, the promoter of the event, says that Smith is excited to competing close to his Canvey Island base.

Carter said: “Georgie will be involved in a bout with Jamie Gelder.

“He has worked hard for this fight and is looking forward to it.

“Georgie has lost three-stone in preparation for it.”

Smith was involved in 20 bouts during his professional career in the 1990s.

Of those bouts, Smith was only beaten in three, while 12 of his 17 wins were by knockout.

One of the highlights of Smith’s time in the ring came when he won the vacant British Boxing Board of Control Southern Area Super Lightweight title after seeing off Richie Edwards.

Smith also defeated Anthony Campbell a few months later to retain the title, but Smith decided to walk away from the professional arena after his defeat to Derek Roche resulted in him missing out on the British Boxing Board of Control British Welterweight title.

Meanwhile, Tyrone Williams will go head-to-head with Northern Champion Ben Hough for the English title.

The likes of Steadman Dixon, Jack Chalk, Dean Wood, Dube Laing, Ray Healy, Mike Pacitto, Pete Chambers, Dean Price, Shane Sexton and James Randall will also be in action at the Mayhem in the Marquee.

The Southern Area title will be up for grabs, with Southend’s Dominic Elliot aiming to walk away with the belt.

And Carter confirmed that the event will also be filmed for a Channel 4 documentary.

Carter added: “Mayhem in the Marquee will be raising money for Cancer Research UK and will be shown on a documentary being filmed by Channel 4.

“Footage will be used in one of Professor Green’s documentaries, where he is talking to people from under-privileged backgrounds and difficult upbringings.”

Tickets for the event are priced at £50 for ringside seating, which includes waitress service and a barbecue. Standing tickets are also available and are priced at £30. For tickets, call Carter on 07701 283860.
