DRU Yearwood is desperate to prolong Southend United’s run in the Checkatrade Trophy with a win against Reading’s under-23 side tonight.

The young midfielder wants the Shrimpers to secure a fourth successive victory ahead of Saturday’s trip to Doncaster Rovers.

And the 17-year-old is also keen to help Blues beat the Royals in a bid to secure more first team appearances for himself.

“We all want to win against Reading to carry on this winning run we’re on and to build our confidence ahead of the Doncaster game this weekend,” said Yearwood.

“For myself personally I would love to get another chance tonight because it’s not as enjoyable when you’re sitting on the bench.

“I started the last game in the competition when we played at Gillingham and it would be good if we could have a good cup run because it would mean more games I might get a chance to play in.”

Yearwood - who came through the youth system at Roots Hall - caught the eye for Blues during pre-season and was rewarded with a four-year professional deal.

The youngster has gone on to make five appearances this season but, after being an unused substitute in the last three games, Yearwood is eager for another opportunity.

“I would love to get out there again and hopefully try and cement a place in the side,” said the midfielder.

“Every time you get a chance you have to make sure you take it and if I’m picked tonight that’s what I will be looking to do.

“I’ve really enjoyed all of the first team matches I’ve had so far and I would love to play again tonight.

“Every game I’ve had has been a great experience and it’s good to play in front of a number of fans.

“They will still be there tonight and I’m looking forward to it.”

If selected, Yearwood will also be lining up against his fellow youngsters in the Reading under-23 side.

But he is unsure what to expect from the Royals.

“We actually played against Reading in a pre-season friendly for the youth team last year but whether or not it will be the same team I don’t know,” said Yearwood.

“I’m not too sure what to expect but the team has been playing well and we’ve had three good wins so we’re going into this full of confidence.

“Four wins in a row would be great, especially as we all know we could get the chance to play at Wembley in this competition so this game will be taken very seriously.”
