SOUTHEND United boss Phil Brown is sweating on the fitness of Michael Kightly.

The winger limped off with a hamstring injury just before half-time in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall.

But Brown will not know the seriousness of the setback until the injury starts to settle down.

“The only negative from the game was Michael Kightly limping out like he did before half-time,” said Brown.

He’s tweaked his hamstring but to what extent I don’t know at this stage.

“We will know more after 48 hours and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed because we obviously don’t want it to be anything serious.”

Kightly missed nine games earlier in the season with a hamstring problem but has now picked up a problem on his right leg.

However, his latest setback did at least enable Anthony Wordsworth to return to action after four games out with a calf problem.

“The only bonus was that Kights was replaced by Woody who got over 45 minutes which we weren’t expecting,” said Brown.

“With a bit of luck he will get 90 minutes on Wednesday and be fully fit for the next League game.”
