ROCHFORD Hundred were crowned London Two North East champions with a convincing 101-3 win against Norwich.

The victory made it 20 league wins in a row for the unbeaten league leaders and also saw them reach the 100 point mark for the season, much to the delight of Hundred’s centre Tom Ashton.

“Saturday’s game showed everything that is good about this group of players,” said Ashton.

“We showed great character in the early part of the game when Norwich threw everything they had at us.

“But we soaked up the pressure without getting frustrated and when we did get an opportunity we took it as the game opened up we showed a ruthless edge and and put them to the sword.”

The victory confirmed Rochford as league champions.

But Ashton insists the squad will still be keen to finish the campaign on a high.

“Winning the league was our main objective at the start of the campaign so it’s objective complete but the season is not over and we have a standard that we are keen to maintain in our remaining two league fixtures,” explained Ashton.

“But it has been very pleasing personally to be involved in a very successful season for Rochford who I started playing for at four years old.

“The future looks bright with everything that is happening on and off the field and I’m excited to be involved.”

Norwich took the lead with a penalty at the weekend before Rochford hit back to dominate the majority of the match.

That pressure soon resulted in prop forward Lewis Brunger touching down before captain Matt Stewart also touched down for the first of his three tries.

Stuart Whatling then also bagged a try before stand off Matt Needham showed some silky skills to touch down and put Rochford 26-3 ahead at half-time.

After the break, the floodgates opened with Stewart bagging two more tries while Tom Corbet, Sam Fombo and Ashton also touched down.

Top scorer Mark Billings bagged the other four tries to take his tally for the season to 37 while Ashton added 13 conversions on another memorable afternoon at Magnolia Road.
