GEORGIE Smith is looking forward to making his final boxing appearance this weekend, reports Joe Southwood.

Smith will go head-to-head with Tony Lewis on Saturday.

The bout will take place at Clements Hall, Hockley.

And Smith, who is from Canvey Island, is eager to get in the ring once again after enjoying two fights in the last 12 months.

The 47-year-old said: “I competed in two fights last year.

“One was at the Troxy, in London, against Ben Doughty.

“The other took place in Southend, against Issac Gibbs.

“I really enjoyed them both and got that old buzz back, so I thought I would do it one last time before I get too old.”

Lewis, who hails from Hackney, will go into the clash having competed in more fights during his career.

But Smith, who is the former British Boxing Board of Control Southern Area Super Lightweight title holder, has been hard at work in preparation for the event.

And he is confident that he will end his career in triumphant fashion.

Smith, who trains at the SS8 gym on Canvey Island, added: “I’ve been doing lots of sparring at SS8 with the boys.

“I’ve been doing 10 rounds straight off with five different sparring partners.

“I’m feeling confident that I will win my last ever fight because I’ve been feeling good in the gym and I’ve retired more men than social security.”

Smith has enjoyed an impressive career in the ring, having been crowned the IBO intercontinental welterweight champion and won five Essex and Eastern Counties titles.

He also fought for England and became the first Essex-born boxer in 104 years to reach the National ABA finals in 1991.

And Smith has confirmed that he will be competing in his infamous St George’s kit as he brings the curtain down on his time in the ring.

“I’m wearing my old St George’s boxing kit,” admitted Smith.

“Obviously I’ve got new shorts as this fight is a heavyweight contest.

“I’ve got a box of St George’s flags which I will be selling on the night and I will donate the money to Canvey Island Rugby Juniors.”
