CANVEY Island ensured they will be in the end-of-season play-offs after cruising to a 3-1 win at Mildenhall Town.

The Gulls’ victory combined with Maldon & Tiptree’s defeat means Canvey cannot be caught by their Essex rivals.

Canvey knew victory was the only outcome that would suit them after three defeats in their last four matches and they pushed the tempo in the early exchanges.

A cross found the head of Martin Tuohy but his header dropped narrowly wide of the post.

The same man then brought a smart save out of Jake Hallett but the goal was coming.

Despite a lack of goals in recent works, George Sykes proved his worth with two key contributions in a matter of minutes.

Martin Tuohy stroked into the corner on 25 minutes and two minutes later Mitch Gilbey profited from some excellent work by Sykes to double the lead.

Ryan Charles laid it on a plate for Gilbey to make it 3-0 five minutes later as Canvey all but assured themselves of the points before half-time.

Danny Heale had bemoaned individual errors in last weekend’s defeat and it was a similar story five minutes after the break.

A corner should have been held by Henry Newcombe but the ball was spilled and Josh Curry tapped in from on the goal-line.

But Canvey were to avoid any further defensive lapses as they chalked up a much overdue three points on the road.
