DANNY Heale praised Canvey Island’s reaction to their poor recent form after they defeated Mildenhall Town and secure an Isthmian North play-off place.

The Gulls were 3-1 winners on the road thanks to a brace from Mitch Gilbey and another goal from Martin Tuohy - their first away victory since they won at Romford at the end of January.

The three points - combined with Maldon & Tiptree’s loss against Cheshunt - means the Gulls’ season will be extended.

And Heale sang the praises of his players, following a heavy 4-1 home defeat against Norwich United last time out.

“I said before the game we needed a big reaction and in the first half we were excellent and meant business,” said Heale.

“We were worth the win and pressure is off us for now. We have two league games left and I can rotate the squad before the play-offs, which is a lottery.”

Heale also applauded the efforts of striker George Sykes - who has now gone 13 matches without scoring - and added he had a suspicion the Gulls would finish the weekend having secured a top six place.

“Cheshunt’s league position is false since Craig [Edwards] has gone in there and I said to the boys that if we get three points it could be over and done with.

“George Sykes had some good chances and it’s not going for him right now but it happens. I said to him that he is getting chances and that is important.”
