IAIN O’Connell has called on Great Wakering Rovers to win all three of their remaining matches and storm to the Essex Senior League title.

Rovers could be champions by tomorrow night if they are able to defeat FC Romania on the road tonight and Basildon United fail to defeat Stansted the following day.

But O’Connell is not expecting favours from their county rivals, and says he does not want any either.

“It’s a great position to be in and a lot of players will never get to experience that,” said the Wakering chief.

“We still have three games remaining and it is looking like it is between us and Basildon now, as Redbridge have played a game more than us.

“We want to win the league and we want three victories in our remaining three matches and I am excited for it.

“I am not thinking about Saturday yet but hopefully a good result in this match can set us on our way.

“We take each game as it comes and the next game for us is against FC Romania. It is always tough against them and we will prepare in the right way.

“We want to be the best by beating the best. They are all good competitors but I keep believing in my boys and they have done brilliantly so far.”

Wakering’s form since the middle of last October has been that of title winners.

O’Connell’s team have suffered just one defeat in the league since losing to Sawbridgeworth Town on October 17.

Twenty-one wins, two draws and one loss in their last 24 matches has put them on the cusp of an immediate return to the Isthmian North.

And O’Connell said his team’s consistency even came as something of a surprise to him.

“You can’t predict this,” said O’Connell. “We didn’t start so well and whatever happens the run until the end of the season has been brilliant and is definitely one the boys can be proud of.

“At one stage Redbridge were 12 points above us and we had only two games in hand but we have turned it around.

“To be top and have it in our hands at this stage, I didn’t expect it but I am very pleased with everything that has happened.”

Wakering will be without defender Danny Hurford for the match as he will be playing for parent club Concord Rangers in their Essex Under-18 Pelly Cup final against Canvey Island on the same night.
