SEEVIC were edged out by Hartpury College in the semi-final of the National Cup yesterday.
Seevic’s youngsters produced a spirited showing in the wet conditions at Rochford Hundred’s Magnolia Road base.
But it was a strong looking Hartpury side who triumphed 31-21 in what Seevic’s director of rugby Danny Cleare felt was a close contest.
“I thought the game was very even for large spells,” said Cleare.
“We were quite dominant in terms of possession and territory but they were well organised, had a tough defence to break down and were far more clinical than us.
“On balance it was a fair result but our boys come away disappointed as we leaked a couple of soft tries.”
However, Cleare still remains proud of his side’s season which saw them crowned national sevens champions for the second season in succession.
“I couldn’t be more proud of what this group of players have achieved not just over this year but over their whole time at the college,” said Cleare.
“On and off the field they conducted themselves professionally and we still have a tour to Canada to come which will really top the year off.”
Hartpury took the lead with a converted try early on before Seevic levelled things up with David Rufai touching down.
Jake Spivey added the conversion before Hartpury raced into a 31-7 lead.
However, Seevic hit back late on with tries from Moses Iwalewa and Tom Cubitt to give the score-line a fairer reflection.
