SOUTHEND United are expected to complete the transfer of Maidenhead United winger Sam Barratt today.

The 22-year-old scored five times for the National League club last season.

And he now looks set to become Chris Powell’s first signing of the summer at Roots Hall.

Barratt, who has played for England C, began his career at Bracknell Town before making the move to Maidenhead in 2014.

The winger - who works full-time as an artist designing trainers with his company Ink and Pencils - helped Maidenhead reach the National League, where he impressed last season.

Barratt’s potential also saw him spend three weeks on trial with Premier League side Crystal Palace in May 2017.

And he will now be eager to impress in the full-time game with Blues.
