ANDY Baker says Wickford’s season starts this weekend against Horndon-on-the-Hill after rain blighted their early season preparations.

Wickford were frustrated in their Shepherd Neame Essex League Division Two opener against Fives & Heronians.

Meanwhile, Horndon put in a stunning performance to wallop Old Southendian & Southchurch by 10 wickets.

And Baker is not underestimating the size of the challenge at the Patmore Memorial Sports Ground.

“We know they are a good side and have good players,” said captain Baker. “Their opening bowlers are particularly good and they are a side to be careful of but on a good day we can compete.

“It is early season and neither knows what the other can do at this stage but, for me, we start the season this week.

“We played last Sunday against Essex under-15s which was a good run-out.

“Last Saturday it pretty much rained all day. But we got to spend some time in the middle and the three guys that did bat did nicely on a wet wicket.”

Old Southendian & Southchurch were no match for Horndon last time out but will be hoping for better against Harlow Town.

A wretched display with the bat saw the Old Boys muster just 45 runs, with Horndon surpassing their total after just six overs.

And club captain Matt Wilson it is not a result the team is going to spend much time thinking about.

“They played well in the conditions and winning the toss was very important,” he said. “We didn’t bat well and 45 isn’t good enough regardless of how well the other team bowled.

“In terms of Harlow Town, I haven’t played them for a few seasons but I remember them being consistent and they have some experienced players, especially with the bat.

“It should be a good test. We want to get some points on the board.”

Harlow Town’s match against Loughton was also beaten by the rain last weekend.

Leigh-on-Sea were were hugely impressive winners against Harlow last time out.

Tomorrow’s second match of the season is at South Woodford, with Leigh determined to continue riding the wave that saw them promoted from Division Three last term.

South Woodford’s match against Oakfield Parkonians was abandoned after just 11 overs.
