BENFLEET skipper Rob Zammit was left beaming with delight following his side’s comfortable win against Basildon & Pitsea.

Benfleet triumphed by 92 runs in the Division Three clash at Mopsies Park.

And Zammit was pleased to continue his side’s strong start to the season which sees them sitting third in the table, just two points behind league leaders Old Brentwoods.

“Saturday’s game was great,” said Zammit.

“We turned up wanting to win and we were happy to continue our good start.

“The ease of the victory was also great.

“We always have tough games against Basildon so to win comfortably was pleasing and there were some very key performances.”

However, Zammit will not be getting carried away by the success.

“The start to the season has been fabulous but it is only a start,” said Zammit.

“We must maintain our high levels and see where we are at nearer the end.

“But the lads and the club are growing in confidence and we want to keep the ball rolling.”

Benfleet batted first after winning the toss and made for 200/9 with Ben Munday top scoring with 65.

Callum Wheeler added 62 while Travis Singleton was the pick of Basildon’s bowlers, taking 3-19.

But, in reply, Basildon were bowled out for just 108 with only two batsmen reaching double figures.

Anant Bhake, who batted at number nine, top scored with 43 but Benfleet’s bowlers come out on top with Munday taking 5-19 and Paul Frensham 4-45.

Westcliff also celebrated a convincing win in Division Three as they saw off Woodford Green by 114 runs.

Westcliff were put into bat after losing the toss and ended their innings on 286/3.

Captain Peter Barnes top scored with a brilliant 103 while Jon Pratt, batting at three, hit a fine 101 not out.

Jack Stead also ended unbeaten on 38 before Woodford Green were bowled out for 172.

Tom Baker (3-48) did most of the damage while Sherwin Stanley, Anish Lukose and Barnes all took two wickets each.

And Barnes hopes it will be the sign of things to come.

“We have great team spirit and if we keep working hard I believe this season will be our year to get promotion,” said Barnes.

“It was a great win at the weekend and it’s been a solid start for us.”
