HARRY Wheeler anticipates making one further addition after bolstering his Billericay Town squad with the signings of Callum Kennedy and Rickie Hayles.

Kennedy joins from AFC Wimbledon, with the 28-year-old left-back dropping three leagues to play National League South football at the AGP Arena next term.

Hayles links up with the club from Dulwich Hamlet, who were also promoted from the Isthmian Premier League last season.

Billericay chief Wheeler says talks have been ongoing for almost a month with former Swindon Town full-back Kennedy, who is based in south London.

And he admits the signing is a particularly satisfying one.

“We have been talking for four weeks and he has had offers from a higher level,” said the Billericay chief. “We had a chat then and have stayed in touch. It was all amicable and we have been able to offer him a good deal.

“It is a big coup for us as he is a League One footballer and there is big difference between League One and League Two let alone League One and the National League South.

“He brings quality, a good attitude and, most importantly, he is a good person. In terms of the level we are signing players from he will probably come from the highest level but there will be other good players.

“We won’t be looking for many more, one more is likely after the signing of Rickie. I have my eyes on good players and if they do sign it will be great for us. It will add to what we have got already.

“We need numbers. We let a few go and we have a good depth but we need a few more.”

And it was a move that equally pleased Kennedy.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Billericay for the next two years,” he said. “The owner, management and players have big ambitions to take this club into the League and I want to help play a part in making that a reality.

“I am very excited to meet the lads and get cracking with pre-season to hit the ground running. I have played with and against a few of the boys over the years and I know they are capable of playing higher so that should put us in good stead for the season.”

Wheeler says his squad currently boasts 17 players at the moment but he is looking to boost those numbers taking potential injuries into account.

One departure is expected to be announced in the coming days.

But Wheeler remains confident with the group he has assembled.

“I think we will do really well,” said the Town chief. “We will be the fittest in the league and that showed at the end of the season.”
