SOUTHEND United new boy Timothee Dieng is keen to secure more career highlights with the Shrimpers - but he may find it hard to match his professional debut.

Dieng made his first appearance for Stade Brest as a centre back lining up against then PSG superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the final game of David Beckham’s glittering career back in May 2013.

And it is an experience Dieng will never forget.

“My first pro game was in David Beckham’s last and I will remember that game for my whole life,” said Dieng, who now features more in midfield.

“It was a big game because they were champions and it was their last game at home but it was a fantastic experience.

“Zlatan was playing too so it was a tough first game but it was a special moment for me.”

PSG triumphed 3-1 that night but Dieng did not stay playing in France for long as he jumped at the chance to come to England, joining Oldham Athletic in 2014.

“The Premier League is a big thing in France and I’m a big Arsenal fan myself so when I had the opportunity to come to England I said yes straight away,” said Dieng.

“I’ve been here a while now which is good and I’m very happy to have come to Southend.”

Dieng signed a two-year deal with the Shrimpers after turning down the offer of a new deal at Bradford City.

And the 26-year-old joined after being impressed by what Blues boss Chris Powell had to say.

“The manager called me and I really liked the way he talked to me and what he said too,” said Dieng.

“I wanted to work with him and Southend finished above Bradford last season too so I thought why not come here.

“Southend were a good side when they beat Bradford 2-0 last season and hopefully we will be even stronger this year.”

And Dieng already feels settled in his new surroundings.

“I like Southend, the weather has been good and my team-mates have been fantastic to me,” said Dieng.

“I also like that there’s an airport here which has a straight connection for me to go home to France which is also good so I’m pleased to be here and I’m looking forward to the season starting.”
