SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell insists Luke Hyam will not be forced onto the sidelines with the injury he suffered against Aberdeen.

The midfielder - who was making his first Shrimpers start - seemed to be in discomfort throughout his 45 minutes against the Scottish side and was treated by physiotherapist Ben Clarkson following his departure at half-time.

But Powell does not think the knock is anything too serious.

“Luke got a knock but it’s nothing major,” said the Blues boss.

“There are one or two we have to nurse at the moment but that’s part and parcel of pre-season and we will do that with Luke.

“It’s not going to force him out of anything and it was good to see him out there.

“We’re still getting used to some of the new players and that’s an important part of these games.

“But the level of our opposition has been good and the next two will be a real test as we face Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United.

“However, it’s all about working hard and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
