SOUTHEND United completed their pre-season schedule with a 2-2 draw at Leyton Orient this afternoon.

The Shrimpers twice went in front at Brisbane Road with Jason Demetriou and Tom Hopper on target.

But the O’s twice hit back to ensure the encounter ended all square.

Blues – who lost goalkeeper Mark Oxley to an injury at half-time – created the game’s first chance with Theo Robinson being teed up inside the penalty area.

But the striker delayed shooting before seeing his left footed effort deflected wide of the right post.

However, the Shrimpers did not have to wait long to break the deadlock as Demetriou soon fired Chris Powell’s side in front in spectacular fashion.

The right-back – who started his career with Orient – picked the ball up 20 yards from goal and sent a stunning shot into the top right hand corner of the net.

Moments later, Blues came close to doubling their lead when Luke Hyam played in Hopper but the striker’s effort was blocked by advancing O’s goalkeeper Dean Brill.

After surviving the scares, Orient soon came close to equalising when a James Dayton’s right wing corner picked out George Elokobi in front of goal but the defender was unable to make a clean connection with the ball.

Blues carried their one goal advantage into half-time when Blues boss Powell made two changes with Nathan Bishop replacing Oxley between the sticks and Simon Cox taking the place of Robinson in attack.

But, five minutes in the break, Orient drew back level with Bonne on target from the penalty spot.

Referee Alan Young pointed to the spot after adjudging Harry Lennon to have fouled James Alabi in the box.

And Bonne made no mistake from 12 yards, sending an assured effort into the right hand side of the net.

Blues soon hit back with Stephen McLaughlin sending a low effort into the side netting before the winger came even closer to putting the visitors back in front when he smashed a left wing cross from Ben Coker against the crossbar from eight yards.

But, with 63 minutes on the clock, the Shrimpers did regain the lead when a fine chip from Cox bounced back off the crossbar and Hopper was on hand to head home the rebound.

Southend soon came close to adding a third with Cox having an effort deflected over by a sliding Josh Coulson.

However, Orient soon responded and equalised for a second time in the 77th minute when Alabi raced away from Michael Turner before firing a low 20 yard shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net to ensure Blues’ final warm up match ended in a draw.
