JASON Demetriou was pleased to still be spot on for Southend United at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The experienced right-back bagged Blues’ goal in the 1-1 draw from the penalty spot.

And Demetrriou - who scored all three of his penalties last season - was again happy to take the responsibility from 12 yards, despite some of his more attacking team-mates wanting the chance to score.

“I was happy with the penalty and I wanted to continue taking them so I was pleased to get the chance to take it too,” said Demetriou.

“You’re always going to get other boys wanting to take them, that’s the nature of the game.

“But while I’m on them and scoring I want to keep taking them and hopefully we can keep getting a few more.”

Demetriou stroked the ball home after Timothee Dieng had been hauled to the floor by Ryan Taylor while attempting to reach a Stephen McLaughlin corner.

But the 30-year-old defender was slightly disappointed to return home from Devon with just a point.

“Overall I thought we deserved to win and we created a lot more chances than them,” said Demetriou.

“It’s a good point but it was a winnable game.”

Blues were on top for the majority of the first half but were forced to fight back from going behind after Plymouth were awarded a hugely contentious spot-kick.

And Demetriou did not feel the penalty - given when McLaughlin brushed against Tafari Moore - should have been awarded.

“I didn’t think it was a penalty, but that’s football,” said Demetriou.

“The referee was closer than the linesman but he took the advice of the linesman to give it.

“When I asked the ref why, he said he didn’t see it but it did all happen really quickly.”

Demetriou’s spot-kick eventually cancelled out Plymouth’s effort, scored by Graham Carey.

And the defender was happy with most aspects of Blues’ display.

“It was a great performance but if we could get that final goal and have that killer instinct it would’ve capped it off,” said Demetriou.

“It was the same last week because it was such a good performance against Doncaster but we couldn’t finish them off.

“There are a lot of positives to take from the game though and we’ll look to build on them moving forward and the atmosphere we have in the group will also help with that.”
