SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell heaped praise on Shawn McCoulsky after the striker’s impressive debut for the Shrimpers.

McCoulsky – who is with the Shrimpers on loan from Bristol City – bagged an impressive effort during a 4-2 defeat against Brentford and Roots Hall.

And Powell was pleased to the forward start his loan stint in style.

“It was excellent and very impressive,” said Powell.

“Shawn had a willingness to compete, he has a good spring and he wants to get in behind.

“For someone who has been with us a day or two he did ever so well.”

McCoulsky was on the bench for Blues at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday before getting the nod against Brentford.

And Powell also feels the striker should be awarded two goals – despite Theo Robinson’s effort appearing to have crossed the line before the striker got a touch.

“It was a fantastic finish for the second goal and he’s got two goals,” said Powell.

“Theo won’t be happy with me saying that but I think he got there before it went over the line.

“He’s got to be pleased with that.

“It’s a good start for him and hopefully he will carry it on.”
