DANNY Scopes says he is proud to be back on the Concord Rangers coaching team.

The former Beach Boys player stepped down as joint coach in May 2012, having helped the team secure promotion to the former Ryman Premier League.

While the club continued to enjoy success under Danny Cowley, Scopes remained working behind the scenes and also coaches Concord Rangers’ under-15 side, who play in the Eastern Junior Alliance.

But he is now back on board with the first team after accepting manager Sammy Moore’s invitation to help alongside Jack Midson and Darren Beale.

And he is excited at the team’s prospects.

“It was after a game in pre-season that Sammy pulled me to one side and asked me if I wanted to step in and help the team in a coaching role,” said Scopes.

“Obviously he and Jack both have playing commitments as well so Darren will always be on the bench and they wanted someone else as well.

“I didn’t say yes straight away but I went home and spoke to my family about it and I felt it would be too good an opportunity to say no to. They supported me.”

Concord have made an excellent start to the National League South season and have already secured a number of notable victories.

But Scopes does not believe the increased expectation around the club will hinder the team.

“Sammy and Jack are both young and very ambitious and this is a project to be excited by,” he said.

“I worked with good teams at Concord in the past with Danny Cowley and enjoyed success with him. This is another chance to do that and I am proud to have been asked to be involved.

“I was a bit nervous stepping back into the dugout for the first time again but I have been made to feel welcome, as I always have by the club.

“Sammy has built a really great group here, which is not in doubt. There are so many talented players and that has shown in the early performances this season. It has been great to watch as a supporter.”

And while some aspects of football have changed over the years Scopes has been watching and coaching Concord, he admits some things remain the same.

“The budgets are slightly different now,” he said. “What some of the teams are spending in this division are crazy but this is the way it is.

“Concord have always kept their feet on the ground and are doing things the right way. I am confident this group and this club can continue to thrive on and off the pitch.”
