FORMER Southend United goalkeeper Daniel Bentley has spoken of his determination to win international honours for England.

All three shot-stoppers in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad came through the lower Leagues before playing at the top.

And Bentley – who was back at Roots Hall with Brentford on Tuesday night – is keen to follow in their foot-steps.

“For me to see those three at the World Cup gives more even more determination to go and achieve it, “Bentley told the Have I Got Blues For You podcast.

“I played against Jack Butland on Saturday.

“Yes he’s played in the Premier League and so has Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford but I remember playing against him when he was at Burton Albion and Freddy Eastwood scored against him in the last minute.

“I remember Butland at Cheltenham when we beat them 4-0 at Roots Hall and Bilel Mohsni scored from about 40 yards.

“Those keepers have all had different routes but there are similarities.

“Nick Pope was at Bury and went up the same season we did.

“It’s a good omen and I’m very experienced now but I’ll work harder every day to get better because I know I can still improve in all areas.”

However, Bentley has been beaten to an England call up by a member of his family.

“My dad has just been picked for England over 50s,” said Bentley.

“He likes to have a joke that he’s been picked before me and he’s double my age so it is a bit of a strange one but he still has real passion to play and I’m pleased for him.”
