SOUTHEND United’s Simon Cox was happy to bag his first goal of the season in the Shrimpers’ 2-0 win against Bradford City on Saturday.

But the striker had not been worried by a lack of goals.

Cox headed home a fine left wing cross from Ben Coker to double Blues’ lead in the second half.

However, the experienced forward insisted the frustrations in front of goal had not been playing on his mind.

“It hasn’t this year but last year it did if I’m honest,” said Cox.

“Last year I felt as though I wasn’t getting in the positions but this year I feel like I’ve been doing the right things.

“I was probably a bit unlucky against Doncaster when the keeper made a good save with his legs and against Plymouth I probably should have scored.

“But I felt like I was getting there and it was just about being patient.

“It was a great ball by Cokes and it was great to head it home.”

Cox’s header came after Tom Hopper had nodded the Shrimpers in front.

And the former Republic of Ireland international is relishing lining up alongside his new strike partner.

“Tom’s brilliant, he really is,” said Cox.

“He’s come in and been a breath of fresh air.

“He’s a willing runner and a bit of battering ram.

“He’s strong and he knows where the net is too which we’ve seen already.”

However, Cox felt the Shrimpers’ victory was more important than opening his account for the season.

Blues were beaten 3-2 by Doncaster Rovers on the opening day of the season before drawing 1-1 at Plymouth Argyle.

And Cox was pleased to make it third time lucky for Chris Powell’s side.

“It’s nice to get off the mark but more importantly it’s nice to get the three points and a clean sheet,” said Cox.

“Our performances have deserved more points but you don’t always get what you deserved.”

Blues will now be bidding for more of the same at Luton Town tomorrow night and Cox knows he must continue to impress if he is to stay in the starting line-up.

“We’ve brought in some really healthy competition this year,” said Cox.

“If you go four or five games without a goal you could quite easily sit on the bench next to the management staff for four or five games.

“But goals breed confidence and hopefully I can get a few more now to help the team get more wins.”
