SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell wants to create more memorable moments at Luton Town tonight.

Powell netted three goals in his 290 outings as a player for the Shrimpers but arguably his most impressive strike came in a 2-2 draw at Kenilworth Road back in 1992.

And the Blues boss is seeking more high points tonight.

“It was a long, long time ago now but I remember it well, it was a right footed half-volley and I didn’t get too many of them,” said Powell.

“I didn’t get many goals at all full-stop really but I think we were 2-0 down and came back to draw 2-2.

“Andy Ansah went to hospital and we had to go and get him so it was an eventful game.

“But Luton has always been a tough place to go.

“Their fans get behind them and we will have to be ready for that.

“But if my left-back scores with his right foot tonight then I’ll be happy, especially if it helps us to get another good result.”

The Shrimpers head into the game on the back of a well-deserved 2-0 win against Bradford City at Roots Hall on Saturday.

But Powell is now gearing his team up for another big effort as Blues face a Luton Town team who were promoted from League Two last season.

“We don’t have a week to bask in the glory of Saturday’s win,” said the 48-year-old.

“We have to dust ourselves down and get ready for what is going to be another tough game.”

Luton - who are managed by former Southend left-back Nathan Jones - have yet to win so far this season and have taken just one point from their opening three fixtures.

The Hatters lost 3-1 at Peterborough United at the weekend but Powell will be paying little attention to the early form guide.

“Luton are a good team,” said Powell.

“I know Nathan and the coaching team there and they’re strong.

“They impressed last year and deservedly came up.

“They won’t be panicking at all because it’s still very, very early.

“But, just like us on Saturday, they will want a result to build the confidence.

“It will be a good footballing game but we will have to earn the right to play and get a foothold in the game.”
