YOUNGSTERS from south-east Essex dominated the individual and team events when the first-ever County Primary Schools' Cross Country Championships were staged at Basildon's Gloucester Park.
The four individual competitions were all won by local students and schools from this part of the world captured a quartet of team honours.
More than 50 schools were represented with 662 runners in all competing.
Year five boys' winner was Tommy Cobain, from Chalkwell Hall School, while Hadleigh took the team prize.
In the girls' race for this age group Millie Smith, Grove Wood, Rayleigh, emerged triumphant with Thurrock's Woodside the team winners.
Woodside also won the year six boys team race with individual honours going to their Daniel Landy.
And Chalkwell emerged triumphant in year six girls where Maisie Jones, from Edward Francis School, Rayleigh, took the individual prize following a superb run of 4 minutes and 32 seconds.
