SOUTHEND United were held to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their League One play-off against Doncaster Rovers at Roots Hall this evening.

Defender Simon Francis came closest to scoring for the Shrimpers just before the break but his close range shot was parried to safety by Rovers keeper Neil Sullivan.

Blues shot-stopper Darryl Flahavan then also had to be at his best to stop Jason Price from converting when clean through in the second half before the visitors were reduced to 10 men late on when Paul Heffernan was sent off for head-butting Charlie Mulgrew.

The Shrimpers now head to the Keepmoat Stadium for the return leg next Friday with everything still to play for.

A great effort from the lads. What are your thoughts for man of the match? A few to choose from, the workrate and effort was amazing from everyone! Just a little bit of luck and quality for the second leg and we'll be o the way to Wembley!

i watched the game on t.v and i had to say the work rate was marvellous but we should've won the match with the chances we had. I think we should've started with Hal Robson Kanu instead of Tommy Black

It was a top effort, a real 100%-er but a couple of moans: Walker just cant finish, he made some excellent runs but is hopeless in front of goal; can only think we play him wide right instead of Black who despite several chances, has failed to deliver. As for Revell?? is he a striker? shame Bailey chose this game to have a poor match after such a great season. Still fancy our chances up there though because we have been so solid away from home .

I was at the game and it was fantastic. The pace was really fast and the passing, esp in the first half, was great. I agree that Bailey had a poor game and wasted a few chances by attempting rather poor effort shots from outside the box. Flahavan made a lot of fantastic saves and was certainly on the ball for the game. The atmosphere was great and it was just a same that the finishing wasn't so good. Either way...Excellent, Well done boys... we were all proud!

Looking at the first leg I think Jason Price looks like their danger man for the next leg. Saying that Though we can put our trust in the two centre halfs we have. They are looking a great partnership at the back now. Just hope they carry their form all the way to Wembley. As for us going forward i'm banking on a sweet left footed cross in the last minute and a great header to win us the tie. Thats my prediction. Come on the lads!
