JEAN Francois Christophe does not want his life-long dream to turn into a nightmare with Southend United.

The French midfielder, who is currently on loan at Roots Hall from Premier League Portsmouth, grew up wanting to play professionally in England.

But, having achieved that aim, he is now also striving for success.

And the 21-year-old wants to taste his first Shrimpers victory when they host Hereford tomorrow.

“I am enjoying my time here but it was disappointing last weekend at Carlisle because we lost,” said Christophe.

“But I know now that together we want the same things and that we’re going to be alright on Saturday against Hereford.”

Christophe looked good during his first Southend start at Brunton Park last weekend and came close to snatching a last gasp equaliser.

He is again hoping to hit top form this weekend and admitted he could be tempted to stay with the Seasiders for longer.

“It’s up the gaffer but if he gives me the opportunity of playing then I would be happy to stay at Southend,” confirmed Christophe who is initially on loan with Blues for a month.

“But we will have to wait and see what happens.”

By the time his loan expires Christophe is confident Steve Tilson’s side will have also risen up the League One table.

They are currently second from bottom in the standings after losing the last four matches but the Frenchman is still relishing playing in England.

“When I was a little boy I always dreamed of playing here,” said Christophe.

“I used to watch Manchester United and Liverpool on television and always wanted to come over so I was very happy when that happened.”

Christophe was signed from Lens by Portsmouth in the summer of 2006.

He has since been on loan at Bournemouth and Yeovil Town to gain first team experience and is now fully settled in his new surroundings.

“It was hard to start off with because some things are different, like the language,” he recalled.

“That can be a barrier so I still practice my English all the time because I couldn’t speak it at all when I first came over.

“I used to carry a phrase book with me everywhere I went and just picked things up from there.

“The weather and the food are different too but I know the life now and I can live here forever.”
