Pair win at the doubles


JULIAN Nichols and Paul Phillips caused double trouble for their rivals when Leigh Tennis Club held its annual summer finals.

The pair won the veteran men’s doubles final and added the men’s doubles crown too.

A gruelling men’s vets showdown lasting two-and-a-half hours saw Andrew Gardiner and Bill Dixon save five match points before eventually losing the third set tie break 7-6.

Nicholls and Phillips were also taken to three sets by Ian Beverley and Jeremy Heales in an exciting match that eventually saw the former pair win 6-3 1-6 7-6.

It was a welcome return to Leigh for veteran player Heales, who won the men’s singles title after beating Allan Steel 6-2 6-4.

Heales became the first player aged above 40 to win the men’s singles since the rise of Leigh youngsters Paul and Christopher Gardiner, who have now move on to other competitions.

Heales capped his singles success by partnering Pauline Gutteridge to victory in the mixed doubles, where they beat Pauline’s son Paul and his doubles partner Lisa Gordon.

Despite the mixed doubles defeat, Gordon successfully defender her ladies’ singles title, beating Cathy Wilson 6-1 6-0 to take the crown for the eighth year running.

RESULTS Men’s singles: Jeremy Heales beat Allan Steel 6-2 6-4.

Ladies’ singles: Lisa Gordon beat Cathy Wilson 6-1 6-0.

Men’s doubles: Julian Nicols & Paul Phillips bt Ian Beverley & Jeremy Heales 6-3 1-6 7-6.

Ladies’ doubles: Pauline Gutteridge & Lisa Gordon bt Irene Duffield & Wendy Thrale 6-2 6-0.

Veteran men’s doubles: Julian Nichols & Paul Phillips bt Andrew Gardiner & Bill Dixon 6-3 4-6 7-6.

Veteran ladies’ doubles: Wendy Thrale & Irene Duffield bt Chris Sawyer & Cathy Wilson 6-1 6-4.

Mixed doubles: Jeremy Heales & Pauline Gutteridge bt Paul Gutteridge & Lisa Gordon 7-6 6-3.

Girls’ singles open: Megan Elliott bt Sophie Gaze 6-2 6-2.

Boys’ singles 12 & under: Daniel Alden bt Matthew Gardiner 4-6 6-2 6-2.

Boys’ singles 14 & under: William Goldhawk bt George Goldhawk (retired).

Girls’ doubles open: Sophie Gaze & Megan Elliott bt Holly Adams & Georgina Ellis 6-3 6-0.

Boys’ doubles 14 & under: William & George Goldhawk bt Andrew Hair & Tom Glover 7-6 6-3.

The action starts at 9.30am with two plate singles finals.
