SOUTHEND United are sweating on the fitness of star striker Dougie Freedman ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Yeovil Town.

The experienced frontman, who has scored four goals in four games since joining from Crystal Palace, has not trained after suffering a thigh problem during last Friday night’s victory over local rivals Leyton Orient.

And Blues boss Steve Tilson is not sure whether Freedman will be passed fit.

“It’s hard to say at the moment but Dougie is definitely a doubt for the game,” confirmed the Shrimpers chief.

“We’ve been working him on all week but his final assessment will be this morning and that’s when we’re going to decide whether or not he will be travelling with us.

“We obviously hope he will be fit because he brings a lot to the team with his goals and experience on the pitch.

“But at the same time we need to be sensible about this and not take unnecessary risks because that way he could eventually end up being out for even longer.”

Freedman should be replaced by Alex Revell if he fails to recover but there is better news concerning skipper Adam Barrett.

The centre-back had also been a doubt after injuring his ankle against Orient.

But he returned to training yesterday and will definitely be fit to face the Glovers.

“Adam’s fine and he will be playing,” confirmed Tilson.

“He’s another key player so we’re pleased he’s recovered in time to play.”

Blues, who are now eighth in the table, will be looking for a fourth successive win when they head to Huish Park.

And Tilson is fully focused on producing another good performance.

“We’ve always had good battles with Yeovil over the years and I’m expecting more of the same tomorrow,” he said.

“They haven’t had the best of starts but I’m not concerned about them because I’m just concentrating on what we do.

“We’ve had three good results and we want to keep it going.

“Ironically our best performance of the season was at Carlisle, when we lost 2-1.

“But we’re in a results driven industry so of course the last few weeks have been more pleasing and we want more wins now.”
