C&K beat champs to League Cup

C&K Basildon are this season’s Essex Women’s League Cup winners following their 2-1 victory over Division One champions Hannakins Farm.

On a windy afternoon at Maldon Town, Lylie Frost drew first blood for C&K when her low 20-yard drive bounced up in front of the Hannakins keeper, off her shoulder, and onto the post.

Her despairing effort to claw the ball away saw it end up in the back of the net to put the underdogs in front.

The game was never a classic, with chances at both ends at a premium and it was not until the 83rd minute that C&K extended their lead over Billericay-based Hannakins.

The speed and power of Aishatu Shuaibu saw her outpace the defence down the left before confidently sliding the ball past the advancing keeper for her team’s second.

Hannakins made a double substitution in an effort to save the game and pulled a goal back deep into time added on.

Sub Amy Sturgeon sidefooted the ball home unmarked at the far post after good work down the right-wing, but this was far too late as time had run out and C&K Basildon celebrated their first League Cup victory.

Great Berry consolidated fourth place in Division One following their 3-0 victory at Runwell Hospital, who finish a place below in fifth.

In a tight game at Eastwoodbury Lane, Hawkwell Athletic did enough to secure runners-up spot in Division Three following their 2-1 victory against Redbridge.
