Popular captain’s 10 years of tee service

THERE was a large turnout of members and helpers at Belfairs Golf Club on Sunday to celebrate Peter Mahoney’s captain's day.

The very popular Mahoney, who has done so much for the club in his almost 10 years service, had a day to remember as 66 golfers enjoyed a morning 18 holes Stableford, followed by a smaller mixed greensome event.

Tony Ball also had a day to remember as his magnificent 44 points took the captain's prize from the morning Stableford and a reduced new handicap of 17.8.

Ball will take some time using the set of golf clubs he won as obviously his current set are none too shabby!

Newcomer Rick Chadwick was also in excellent form and saw his handicap reduced to 7.2. as he powered his way to 41 points.

Former captain Tony Fagg found some top form as his 39 points got third spot on countback from Ray Beadell and Andrew Nash who also played splendidly.

Another newcomer, Ray Hallet (5) shot an excellent 69 gross to take the president's scratch prize and demonstrate his liking for the Belfairs track.

Alan Berry and Bob Clark both scored 40 points but the former's better back nine bore fruit as he took the main committee prize with the latter second.

The veterans had 38 points by two players for the top prizes with Mike Wellham edging Harry Rodwell into second on countback.

Other prizeswinners in a truly great day were: Handicaps 0-15 - 1, Nigel Warder (38 pts); 2, Kevin Gough (38); 3, Kevin Buck (38).

Handicaps 16-20 - 1, Trefor Williams (38); 2, Syd Chaplin (37); 3, Graham Carter (37).

Handicaps 21-28 - 1, Colin Dobinson (38); 2, Mark Duguid (35); 3, Jon Watson (35).

Nearest the pin winners were Ray Beadell (1st ), Bob Clark (7th), John Tanner (10th), Jon Howley (12th) and Hugh Brown (15th), while Ray Hallett won the longest drive on the 14th. The nearest the pin winner in two was Andrew Meddle (9th hole).

The afternoon greensomes winners were Phil Hance and Jan Soilleux with 33 points just ahead of Andrew Meddle and Tish Askins (32) while it was good to see young Amy Innard help partner Dave Smith to third with 31.
