Blistering totals mirror hot weather as half field post net par scorecards

SCORING matched the scorching weather conditions in Rochford Hundred's Saturday medal with more than half the field in the top division returning net par or better.

The superb condition of the course - especially the greens - was taken full advantage of by Neil Adams who won division one with 69-3=66. But that was only a shot ahead of Darren Morris (77-10=67) with John Gray (74-6=68) pipping two others for third spot on countback. Adams really caught fire on the back nine which he covered in five under par gross - his total included 11 pars, an eagle plus three birdies. Morris enjoyed eight pars and a trio of birdies but a triple bogey on the unlcuky 13th spoilt his day. Gray parred 10 holes and birdied three.

Lindsay Cunningham chalked up the best net score of the day to win division two.

His 76-12=64 included 10 pars plus two birdies while 11 pars helped Mitchell Smith to 78-13=65 with Roger Fearn (80-12=68) seeing off two players to capture thrid place on countback thanks mainly to nine pars and a birdie. Six pars and two birdies helped John Mellor to 84-18=66 and victory in division three ahead of Ron Rowson (85-18=67) and Brian Taylor (86-17=69), who edged out Ken Benson (89-20=69) on countback.

Rowson parred nine holes but hit trouble with five double bogeys and Taylor recovered from a nightmare triple bogey opening hole and a quadruple bogey to hit six pars and a brace of birdies.

Jeremy Burrows saw his handicap cut by one to nine after leading the 100 strong field in the weekly midweek Stableford competition to help qualify for the Scott Spencer Trophy final.

Burrows notched eight pars and four birdies in his 42 points, two better than runner-up Roy Abbott who pipped two players, Paul Birrell and Alan Rapson on countback.

June Jennings hit top form to win Rochford Ladies Southgate Bowl - a 27 hole Stableford competition. Despite suffering two “blobs” Jennings chalked up 60 points, beating off the challenge from Lyn Ivison (58) and Danielle Anderson (57).
